Pet loss helplines and crisis support

When someone dies, there is usually a number to call. When a pet dies, most of us are handed nothing at all — and the people around us often do not understand why we are still crying a month later.

This page is a short, verified list. Every number below was checked against an official source on the date shown, and we name the source so you can check it yourself. We do not run any of these services, and we collect nothing at all when you use this page.

If you are in crisis right now

Grief is not an illness, and needing to talk to someone is not a crisis. But if you are having thoughts of ending your life, or you cannot keep yourself safe, please call one of these numbers now. They are free, confidential, and answered by trained people who will not judge you.

Pet loss support lines

Dedicated pet bereavement phone lines are rare. The United Kingdom has a national one, run by Blue Cross — if you are in the UK, this is the closest thing to a service built exactly for what you are going through. Elsewhere, the lines above will still listen to you talk about a pet; you may just have to explain it first.

What happens when you call

  1. Someone answers and asks what is going on. You do not need the words ready, and you do not need to justify calling — "my dog died and I can't stop crying" is a complete sentence.
  2. It is confidential. These services are not connected to your employer, your doctor or anyone else, and they do not report back to anyone.
  3. You can cry, go quiet, or hang up. There is no script and no obligation to keep talking. You can call back later, or next week — the line will still be there.
  4. If the person suggests something you do not want, you are allowed to say no. They are there to listen, not to manage you.

If your country or region is not on this list

We only publish numbers we have checked against an official source, so this list is short on purpose. Two things help if you are somewhere we have not covered yet: search findahelpline.com (run by the charity ThroughLine together with the International Association for Suicide Prevention — searchable by country and topic, in many languages), and ask your vet. Veterinary staff are usually the best-informed local route to bereavement support.

Questions about this list

Do you run any of these helplines?

No. We are not affiliated with any of them and we receive nothing if you call. This page exists because the advice to "contact a local support line", which appears everywhere, is useless without an actual number.

I am not suicidal. Is it okay to call?

Yes. These lines exist for emotional distress, not only emergencies, and grief counts. You do not have to be at the worst point of your life to deserve twenty minutes of someone listening.

Will they understand that this is about a pet?

Most will, and more than you might expect — pet loss is one of the reasons people call. If someone seems unsure, say plainly: "my animal died and I am grieving." Some callers find it easier to start with "I lost someone close to me" if they are tired of explaining.

Can I call on behalf of someone else?

Yes. If you are worried about a friend or family member, these lines will talk to you about how to support them, and many can advise on what to do if you think someone is in immediate danger.
