What to Do on the Anniversary: A Ritual for the Day You Lost Them

“Everyone else has forgotten the date. I have not. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with it.”

Scripture never asks you to pretend the date is ordinary. It gives grief a calendar, and then gives it a morning.

1. God is not embarrassed by a season for this

Ecclesiastes 3:1

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."

That verse is usually read at weddings and beginnings. Read it again with the calendar of loss in your hand: there is a time to keep, and a time to lose; a time to weep, and a time to mourn.

So the anniversary is not a relapse. It is a season returning on schedule. You are not going backwards — you are keeping a date that God Himself built into human life.

2. Scripture sets aside days — and then ends them

Deuteronomy 34:8

"And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended."

Thirty days. Not a vague “whenever you feel like it,” and not “never mention it again.” A set number of days, marked out, woven into the community’s calendar.

Notice the second half of the verse too: the days were ended. Grief is real and it is finite. Both halves are mercy. You are allowed a day on the calendar — and you are allowed, one day, for that day to be done.

3. Do it in the morning, and again in the evening

Lamentations 3:22-23

"It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."

These words were written by a man standing in ruins. His own city was burned. And still he writes: the mercies are new every morning.

That is a rhythm you can borrow for the anniversary. Put something in the morning — light a candle where the bowl used to be, read their name out loud, take the walk you always took. Then put something in the evening, and let the day close.

John 11:35

"Jesus wept."

Two words. The shortest verse in the Bible is a man standing at a friend’s grave, doing exactly what you may do on that day. He did not perform composure. He wept.

If the day ends and all you did was cry and eat something and go to bed, then the day was kept faithfully. That is not a failure of the ritual. That is the ritual.

Three things you can do that day

🕯️

Make it visible

A candle, a framed photo, a bowl left out on purpose. Grief that has a place to stand is easier to carry than grief that stays invisible.

🍽️

Feed someone, including yourself

Cook the meal you made for them. Or bring food to a shelter and say their name while you do it. Love that used to flow one direction can keep moving.

📝

Write one line, not a report

One sentence: “This year I missed you most at ___.” Next year you will add another. The lines become a record of love over time.

“Father, this date is heavy and You know why.
Thank You for giving grief a season instead of a deadline.
Hold them, wherever they are, until the morning when everything is made new.
And hold me through this day. Amen.”

A prayer you can try

“Lord, I am keeping this day on purpose. I am not asking You to make me forget them. I am asking You to be near while I remember. Let the morning bring what I need, and let the evening close gently. Amen.”
