Pets in Heaven — Them, Heaven, and Your Grief
“After they died, the only thing I really wanted to know was this: are they okay? Will we ever see each other again?”
The Bible doesn't answer every question in one sentence — but it gives enough light to see hope even in the darkest night.
Before you begin
This is not a place that asks you to "move on" quickly. These fourteen readings are for you — still missing them.
Losing an animal companion is a particular kind of grief. People say things like "it was just a dog" or "just get another one" — but you know that isn't true. They knew the sound of your footsteps coming home. In your hardest year, they stayed pressed against your feet. What left with them was the first pair of eyes that greeted you every morning.
The Bible actually says a great deal about animals. God created them, feeds them, makes a covenant with them, and places them inside the world He promises to renew. These verses don't prove that "every pet is in heaven" — the Bible doesn't promise that — but they reveal something tender: in God's plan, animals were never disposable extras.
May what you find here be more than verses — may it be the God who remembers even a sparrow, remembering yours.
Fourteen readings for you
Will I See My Pet Again?
The hope of the Bible for animals and heaven — creation itself waits for redemption, and the new creation still has animals in it.
Romans 8:19-22 · Isaiah 11:6-9 · Revelation 21:4-5
Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten
They were so small — will the world remember them? Jesus said not one sparrow falls without your Father knowing.
Matthew 10:29-31 · Psalm 147:9 · Psalm 36:6
Beyond the Rainbow Bridge
“Rainbow Bridge” is a beautiful image — and the Bible really does have a rainbow: God's everlasting covenant with every living creature.
Genesis 9:9-13 · Isaiah 65:25 · Revelation 5:13
Permission to Grieve
God keeps your tears in a bottle. Grief is not a lack of faith — it is love still going on.
Psalm 56:8 · Psalm 34:18 · Matthew 5:4
Will They Remember Me?
Names, memory, and being known: what Scripture says about the question it never answers in one sentence.
Isaiah 43:1 · Psalm 147:4 · 1 Corinthians 13:12
Does God Hear Us Pray for a Pet?
Should we pray for a sick pet? What Proverbs says, how Jesus answered with a sheep, and why prayer never replaces the vet.
Proverbs 12:10 · Matthew 12:11-12 · Philippians 4:6
When You Can't Find the Words
When grief takes your words away, the Psalms give you lines to borrow — and Romans says the Spirit prays what you cannot say.
Psalm 130:1-2 · Romans 8:26 · Psalm 23
Their Forever Home
A sparrow found a house, and Jesus went to prepare a place. The home they had with you was a small picture of a house that lasts.
Psalm 84:3 · John 14:2-3 · Psalm 145:15-16
A Blessing for the Bowl and the Bed
God wrote animal care into the law and counted the cattle of a city. Those ordinary mornings were never too small to bless.
Deuteronomy 25:4 · Jonah 4:11 · Matthew 6:26
Death Has Been Abolished
Christ abolished death, and Revelation promises a day with no more death. The grave does not get the last word.
2 Timothy 1:10 · 1 Corinthians 15:26 · Revelation 21:4
A Prayer Letter to Your Pet
You do not need the right words. Pour out what is already there — and write it down so you can come back to it.
Psalm 62:8 · 1 Peter 5:7 · Psalm 142:2
What to Do on the Anniversary
Scripture gives grief a season, not a deadline — and gives that day a morning.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 · Deuteronomy 34:8 · Lamentations 3:22-23
When a Child Asks Where the Pet Went
For parents: how to tell the truth and keep hope, at the table, on the road, and at bedtime.
Deuteronomy 6:7 · 2 Samuel 12:22-23 · Isaiah 11:6
Is My Pet Waiting for Me?
God’s clock is not ours, and the direction of waiting runs toward them.
2 Peter 3:8 · Ecclesiastes 3:11 · 2 Samuel 12:23
How to read these
Slowly — not all at once
One paragraph is enough. If a verse makes you cry, stop there. That isn't weakness; that is love moving.
Put their name into the verse
When you read “He gives to the beast its food,” try their name in that sentence. God cared for them like that, too.
Say one thing to them afterwards
It doesn't need to be beautiful. “I miss you” is enough. If you want to say more, the guided journal in PetLoss will sit with you.
