Beyond the Rainbow Bridge — God's Covenant With Animals

“People say they've crossed the Rainbow Bridge. But is that just a nice thought — or is there real hope?”

Here is the surprising part: the Bible really does have a rainbow, and that covenant was made for animals.

1. That rainbow was a covenant with animals

After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah, promising never again to destroy the earth by water. But the parties to that covenant were not only Noah and his descendants:

Genesis 9:9-13

"And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you… And the bow shall be in the cloud; and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth."

Notice the phrase “every living creature” — birds, cattle, and every beast of the earth are named as covenant partners. And God set the rainbow in the clouds as a sign between Him and the earth, with every living creature.

This is one of the most overlooked and tender facts in all of Scripture: God once formally and permanently made a covenant with animals.

So the human name “Rainbow Bridge” is not so far off after all. Scripture says that light is a sign — and a sign never means “the end.” It means “there is more to come.”

2. In the world to come, they lie down in peace

When Isaiah describes the world God will make, animals are central to the picture:

Isaiah 65:25

"The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock… They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD."

And Revelation lets us hear who is singing in the final worship:

Revelation 5:13

"And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever."

“Every creature” is worshipping. Not only people.

And the Psalms sum it up in one short line:

Psalm 150:6

"Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD."

Everything that has breath — including them — is inside that song.

3. So beyond the rainbow bridge is a promise

We cannot add promises on God's behalf. But we can stay inside what He has already said: He made a covenant with every living creature; the world He will make has animals living in peace; His final worship includes “every creature”; everything that breathes will praise Him.

These verses don't say, “your pet is certainly there.” But they make one prayer completely legitimate: “Lord, may they be inside Your promise.” And this is the God who left a rainbow for animals.

Consider this: if God left a rainbow for animals, will He not remember yours?

“You set Your bow in the cloud as a sign with every living creature.
When I see that light, I will remember them.
May they be at peace inside Your promise, just as You promised.
And may Your covenant hold me up on the days I miss them. Amen.”

A small ritual for you

If a rainbow appears after the rain, let it be your sign. Stand there for a few seconds and talk to them — no need for conclusions, no need to finish the thought. In Scripture that light was always “the sign of a covenant,” and a sign means God has not forgotten.
